Radar Uses

Radar is used by a unit to detect and track other units. This information is fed to weapons or other allied units. Currently, only missiles depend on radar for guidance. Although radomes are on the models for bullet based anti-air systems (C-RAM, CIWIS, and other AA guns), these systems do not depend on radar mechanics to lead and range shots.

Detection

When within range and line of sight, a radar source may appear on the RWR and ARAD, but not necessarily change the detection flag. This works both ways. For example, a far away unit may suddenly appear on the player's RWR, but will not generate an icon on the map. The player may also be to far to return a meaningful signal. In this case both are undetected. However, the player can use the radiation source as a target for an anti-radiation missile, or to get a bearing to get a target. Similarly, there can be an enemy air unit beyond visual range that does not detect you on their radar yet. Upon sensing your radar source, they will turn and fly towards its.

Weapon Guidance

Aircraft with active radar guided missiles must first lock a target with their own radar. After the missile is fired, it's onboard radar will take over to guide it to the target.

Ground based surface-to-air missile launchers need to be paired with at least one ground based radar source. A radar base will be responsible for detecting a unit and authorizing a launch from the one closest SAM site to the unit. Similar to air based missiles, the SAM will use its own onboard radar to home into the target.

SAM systems on ships are closed systems. Destroying all onboard radars will render all onboard SAM systems inoperable.

Evasion

As of the most recent Public Testing version, realistic radar has been permanently turned on.

Ground clutter is now taken into account, and it is possible to "Notch" a missile. It has no concept of ground or collision. A missile will lead a unit's trajectory even if it means hitting the ground.
